Information about Department of Health and Human Services Rule

HHS Mandate an Attack on Religious Liberty and Conscience Rights

Support Respect for Rights of Conscience Act

On January 20, 2012, the Obama administration announced it would make no changes to a rule proposed last summer by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”) that presents an attack on religious liberty and our right to be free to live by our religious beliefs.

The HHS rule in question requires that virtually all private health plans include coverage of female sterilization procedures, contraceptives and abortifacients as “preventive services,” regardless of whether or not the insurer, employer or insured individual has a moral objection to such drugs and procedures.  The rule includes a requirement – unprecedented at the federal level – that to qualify for a “religious employer” exemption, the party in question must hire and serve primarily people of its own faith.  As our Catholic charitable organizations, schools, and hospitals serve all people regardless of their faith, the rule would apply and would require that we either stop hiring and serving non-Catholics or violate our own religious beliefs by providing insurance coverage for medications and procedures we believe are immoral.

For further information about the HHS rule, visit www.usccb.org

 ACTION:

Support the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179, S. 1467).  This Act would ensure that those who participate in the health care system “retain the right to provide, purchase, or enroll in health coverage that is consistent with their religious beliefs and moral convictions.” To write to your representatives in Congress, visit:  http://www.nchla.org/  and click on “Action Alert.”

Concert to Benefit The Rosemarie Cox Scholarship Award

About nine years ago the Knights of Columbus Council at St. Mark's (Londonderry), set up a scholarship fund.  The Rosemarie Cox Scholarship Award was named after the daughter of the Council's former Grand Knight, Tom Cox. She died in a car accident in May of 2003.  She was a wonderful young lady who was very active in our church ministries, including music.  In June of each year, our Council gives out at least one scholarship for $500 to a high school senior, and if finances allow, additional awards.  In years when we have a major fundraising event, like this concert, we expect to award at least two seniors, one from St. Mark's and another for a student in our local community outside of St. Mark's.  We did just that two years ago when we had a successful concert at the Stockbridge with Brian Templeton and his band.

Our main act this year, is Frederico Cardella, a rising star in the adult contemporary and classical pop music arena.  Think of Andrea Bocelli, and you get a feel for his type of music.  He will sing some Sacred Hymns as well as a number of contemporary pieces.  Don't be surprised by a blues duo with a special guest!   Frederico is currently working with Grammy Award winning producer and composer Rudy Perez and will have a new CD out around the time of our concert.  There is also some discussion on a possible PBS concert special later this year, filmed in Italy. Joining Fred will be an ecumenical choir as well as a few other local talented performers.  The renowned Londonderry High School Drumline will give the opening performance! A special silent auction will be run by the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains.  The majority of the funds raised by the auction will benefit their Girl Scouts Beyond Bars prison ministry.   Frederico will be working hard that weekend, as he will appear at two Masses over that weekend, one at Ste. Marie's in Manchester, and one at St. Jude's.  Then he will end the weekend of ministry by giving a concert at the Rockingham Jail in Brentwood.

Ticket prices for the March 23rd concert at the Stockbridge Theatre in Derry will be $17.50 for adults and $12.50 for students and seniors. Go to www.stockbridgetheatre.com to purchase your tickets or call 603-437-5210.  You may also find additional information and downloads at www.kofconcert.org.

One Body of Hope - St. Jude Update

All I can say is WOW!!!!  Our One Body of Hope team raised over $4,000.00 for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life!  Many thanks to our generous donors and our stalwart (and soggy) team members for all the support and fun.  Special thanks to our creative team of Vicky and Adela Thickins and Trish Woodward - their campsite birthday cake won FIRST PLACE!!!!  And a special shout-out to our youth participants.  What an amazing group of motivated and mature kids; we should all be very proud of their efforts and their generosity of spirit.

Greater Derry and Londonderry Relay for Life numbers as of 11:30 a.m. June 25: 80 teams, over 880 participants, over 770 luminarias lined the track, and over $177,000 was raised with money still coming in.  The books don't close until the end of August for the 2011 Relay, so please visit our One Body of Hope Team Web Site if you would like to donate.

And since it's never to early to start planning your duct tape cake or costume ...
